Sep 21, 2013 · How does an idle air control valve work What is an idle air control valve. Many people are confused about how idle air control valves work. An idle air control valve literally bypasses air around a closed throttle plate so the engine can get air at idle. Because it bypasses air, it’s also called an air bypass valve.
The symptoms of a bad idle air control valve include illuminated Check Engine Light, wrong idle speeds, stalling, and the inability to start the engine during ignition. A replacement idle control valve can cost anywhere between $4 and $923. Thick Film Ignition (TFI) modules were used on Ford vehicles with distributors from the early 1980s to the mid-1990s. It was used on a number of Ford's engines, the EFI 5.0 engines in particular. The TFI module is a gray box fitted to the side of the distributor. It is about one inch wide, and about four inches long.

This idle air control motor could be your issue! This is an idle air control motor (IAC) for your 1986-93 Ford Mustang 5.0L .It is the solenoid that bolts to the throttle body that controls changes in the idle caused by loads on the engine. I had the same problem. It is the idle air control valve and VERY easy to fix. The IAC is located on the top of the motor under the cover. Take off the cover (6 screws), unbolt the IAC (2 bolts), unplug it and give it a good soaking with carb cleaner inside. Reinstall it and you should not have any problems.

When I reduce the power quickly (from 1500 to 650 rpm) the Idle Air Control Valve is not quick enough to maintain the rpm, they drop under 650 rpm, and the engine dies. If I drop the power slowly, the engine runs... can anyone tell me the symptoms of each and how to trouble shoot? I have the location of the IPR and will be cleaning it tomorrow and is there anyway to...

Replacing the camshaft and tappets before they get bad will greatly extend engine performance and long life. Longer engine life, increased engine efficiency, smooth idle and good power, cannot be expected from camshafts that look like either camshaft b or c shown in these images (and it is not an uncommon sight). Ford has also issued a recall (04S13) for 2001-2003 Ford Escape sport utility vehicles with 3.0L V6 engines for an intermittent stalling problem. The stalling typically occurs while decelerating at speeds below 40 miles per hour. The problem is caused by the calibration of the idle air control valve and evaporative emissions system.

Unplugged, it should read the full 12V, unless there is a burden resistor AFTER the diode, but still in the TFI. Again, common practice for better voltage regulation, but rather than a diode, it may just actually use a simple resistor network to limit current to the PIP power in case the PIP sensor fails shorted.
